Movies have been part of human existence ever since the first private screening by the Lumière brothers in Paris in 1895.  More than a hundred years and hundreds of thousands of movies later, people have picked those movies which they love and consider the best.  And one of the main appeals of films is the main characters and the stars who played them.  So here is a peek at some of the most loved movies of all time and the memorable actors and actresses who starred in them. You'll definitely be surprised at what these celebs look like now as some seem to have discovered an anti-aging secret while others had to resort to plastic surgery to keep their youth.

The Movie: Bonnie and Clyde

What enthralled viewers to the 1960s classic film by Arthur Penn is how glamorously the lead stars, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, who played Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow respectively, looked on screen.  Although the real life story of the petty robbers was anything but glamorous.  The criminal duo's actions, however paltry their crimes were, perhaps had some life altering effects on owners of the bank accounts they robbed from.

Bonnie and Clyde Stars Still Alive: Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway

Faye Dunaway, once described as one of the most beautiful and most talented actresses of her generation, is now 77 years old and still graces us with rare appearances on film.  The same goes for Warren Beatty, who is now 81 years old and happily married to actress Annette Bening.   However, at their age, both stars of the Hollywood classic film, Bonnie and Clyde, are still very strong as proven in the duos appearance in the 2017 and 2018 Oscar awards.  The 2017 Oscars being the one where the two called out the incorrect winner for the Best Picture category, calling out La La Land when the real winner was Spotlight.

The Movie: It's a Wonderful Life

One Christmas day, George Bailey finally has had it with all of the problems in his life and decides to end it by jumping off a bridge.  But before he can do it, an angel named Clarence arrives to rescue him.  Clarence showed George a version of a world with his loved ones, where he did not exist.   The experience made George appreciate his life, problems and all.  When Clarence brought him back to reality, George was overwhelmed with the people who arrive at his home to offer financial assistance, all of whom he has helped in the past.  Christmas will never be complete without watching this classic film.

It's a Wonderful Life Stars Still Alive: Karolyn Grimes

It’s a Wonderful Life is a staple film during the Holidays, originally shown in theater in 1946; most of its stars have already passed away.  Well, except for one - Karolyn Grimes who played the role of Zuzu Bailey.  Zuzu is the daughter of George Bailey, the one who got sick and was sad because her flower has lost its petals.  Zuzu and her flower petals was a big part of the plot of the movie, and the actress who played her, Karolyn Grimes is now 78 (she was 6 when she filmed It’s a Wonderful Life) and a retired medical technologist.

The Movie: Vertigo

The Alfred Hitchcock's classic film is all about a retired police officer, John 'Scottie' Ferguson, who quit the force because of a fear of heights and the condition called vertigo he developed after an accident.  Scottie, then started working as a private investigator, was hired by a man named Gavin Elster to investigate the strange actions of his wife, Madeline.  A series of events happens later, which are full of suspenseful and romantic moments.

Vertigo Stars Still Alive: Kim Novak

Kim Novak loved the acting craft very much, but admitted she did not like everything else that goes with it in Hollywood.  For this reason she retired early, focusing on her first love - painting.  Novak now happily lives in Oregon with her husband of 41 years.  When she made a rare appearance at the 2017 Oscars, people took notice of her appearance because it seemed she had a botched plastic surgery.  The actress later said that she regret having filler injections on her face a few days before the Oscars, and mentioned she looks fine now.

The Movie: Raging Bull

The Martin Scorsese 1980 classic film Raging Bull is all about the brutal real-life story of boxer, Jake LaMotta.  Aside from being considered one of the best films of all time, it is deemed by some as the best biopic ever made.  Aside from highlighting the sports of boxing in the film, it also puts a spotlight on the theme of redemption.

Raging Bull Stars Still Alive: Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, and Joe Pesci

Beloved actor Robert De Niro is very active in Hollywood, both in acting and producing, even at 74 years old.  Joe Pesci, who De Niro has starred in several films with, retired from acting back in 1999 to focus on a musical career; only to go back to acting in 2006 through the De Niro produced film, The Good Shepherd.  Now 75, his last film credit was in 2011, but he is set to appear alongside De Niro in The Irishman.  On the other hand, Cathy Moriarty’s career was on play and pause for a while, so she can be seen on the screen every now and then at 57.  She was a newcomer in the Raging Bull, discovered by Joe Pesci himself, since he noticed she looked a lot like Jake LaMotta’s wife, Vikki.  She was only 17 when she starred in the film, but managed to earn an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

The Movie: Airplane!

It has been said the era of comedy films can be split into two, one is before the film Airplane! and the other being after the crazy comedy movie. It's also the film that made parodies famous, and even if a lot of films follow suit, nothing can top the original.  The comedy classic, no matter how stupid the gags were, is just hilarious with their take on bad food served during flights, irritating seatmates, and strange pilots.

Airplane! Stars Still Alive: Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty

With the passing away of comedian Leslie Nielsen in 2010, the most memorable stars of the movie Airplane! left are Julie Hagerty, who is now 63 years old and still very much active in the industry appearing both in films and television shows. Then there is Robert Hays, now 70 years, who still appears on-screen every now and then, with his last film credit in 2016.

The Movie: The Deer Hunter

The film went on to earn five Academy Award Nominations, unfortunately, not winning either. The late Burt Lancaster was starring as Lou Pascal, along the side of the extraordinary Susan Sarandon as Sally Matthews. The movie follows their story as they find each other while being surrounded by dangers. While Burt was used to attending the Oscars by that time, it was the first nomination that Susan Sarandon ever received.

The Movie: On the Waterfront

It has Brando; of course it would be one of the best and most loved films of all time.  This may be the same sentiment that a lot of film lovers have for the film On the Waterfront.  The Elia Kazan classic centers on the life of a boxer on the rise, Terry Malloy, and his fight to bring down mob boss Johnny Friendly, who controls the Hoboken waterfront.

On the Waterfront Stars Still Alive: Eva Marie Saint

Although the film’s creators eyed Marlon Brando for the part of Terry Malloy, they offered the role first to Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift, and Paul Newman. With the case of Eva Marie Saint’s role, Edie Doyle, it was first offered to Grace Kelly, but she turned it down for another film she wanted to do.  The move worked in favor of Saint, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress for her role.  Saint, now 94 years old, is still alive and kicking, although the last on-screen appearance she made was in 2014.

The Movie: Ghostbusters

From the title alone you'd know what the premise of the film is, a group the 'busts' ghosts.  The 1984 original version of the film will always be the most loved, compared to the sequel and of course, the 2016 reboot.  The film follows the story of 3 parapsychologists from Columbia University, namely Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, and Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore, who formed a ghost-eliminating group called The Ghostbusters.  The most difficult assignment of the group was to close down a gate to another dimension that has been opened with the help of Dana Barrett and Louis Tully.

Ghostbusters Stars Still Alive: Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford

The two lead stars of the critically acclaimed film Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford, who played Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward respectively, are now both in their 80s.  Hoffman, who’s now 80, was last seen on the big screen in the film The Meyerowitz Stories in 2017.  While the 81 year old Redford is still very much active producing films, TV mini-series, and documentaries, as well as acting.  Redford will be seen next in the film, The Old Man & The Gun.

The Movie: Mary Poppins

One of the best loved movies by both adults and children is Mary Poppins.  Considered to be one the many gems of Disney, the film is a blend of both live action and animation.  With the perfect portrayals of Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dykes as Bert/Mr. Dawes Sr. as the lead characters, who doesn't want to sing along with them as they break into songs?

Mary Poppins Stars Still Alive: Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke

Did you know that Julie Andrews originally declined the part of Mary Poppins when it was offered to her, because she was pregnant back then? But Disney executives, perhaps recognizing she’s perfect for the role, said they would wait for her.  The role helped Andrews win a best actress award from the Academy, the Golden Globes, and the BAFTA.  Not to mention the movie was a huge box office success. The Shining Stars Still Alive: Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall

The award-winning actor Jack Nicholson is now 81 years old and has retired from the acting industry since 2011.  We can’t blame him for finally retiring, after all his acting career spans 6 decades, which is quite a feat.  On the other hand, no news has been heard from Shelley Duvall from a long time, none until she resurfaced and was featured in the TV show Dr. Phil in 2016.  She claimed on the show that she is suffering from a mental illness.  Now 69 years old, the actress looks so much different today as compared to how she once looked as an actress in her prime.

The Movie: The Empire Strikes Back

With the first film in the Star Wars trilogy becoming a pop culture phenomenon, it's no surprise that the next film that follows it, The Empire Strikes Back becomes loved by fans all over the world.  Especially when it's in this film that everyone finds out Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's real father.

Star Wars Stars Still Alive: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and James Earl Jones

The famous trio from the original Star Wars movie is sadly now just two, with the passing of Carrie Fisher in 2016.  Mark Hamill, now 66, has come out of his semi-retirement when he appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.  He was last seen as Luke Skywalker again in the most recent Star Wars installment, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  The 76 year old Harrison Ford doesn’t show any sign of slowing down, he is set to reprise his role as Indiana Jones again in a new film that is scheduled to begin filming in 2019.  Meanwhile, one star of the Star Wars films who we do not see but only hear is actor James Earl Jones, who was the voice of Darth Vader since 1977.  Jones is still very much active in the industry at 87 years old.

The Movie: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

When criminal Randle McMurphy got into trouble with the law again, he pleads not guilty to avoid prison duties.  Instead of prison, he was sent to a mental institution, which to his dismay, is worse than prison.  The mental patients suffer from the abuse of Nurse Ratched.  With the help of other patients, McMurphy tries to go against the oppressive nurse of the mental ward.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Stars Still Alive: Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher

One of the highlights of Jack Nicholson’s career is starring in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as Randle McMurphy, for which he won a Best Actor Academy Award.  Now 81, Nicholson chose to retire and devote his time to his children and grandchildren.  There are rumors that he is set to come out of retirement to star in the German comedy, Toni Erdmann, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.  Meanwhile, Louise Fletcher, who played Nurse Ratched in the same film, also won an Academy for her performance.  Now 84 years old, Fletcher is semi-retired, but appears once in a while as a TV show guest.  She once took an 11 year break from acting to raise her sons.

The Movie: Blade Runner

Blade Runner is a futuristic film set in the year 2019, which is a year from now.  Needless to say, the prediction of clones living in colonies outside Earth in the film is far from becoming a reality today.  The movie’s plot follows Rick Dickard, a former police officer hired to be a ‘blade runner’, to go after 4 replicants or clones who returned to Earth with a stolen spaceship.

Blade Runner Stars Still Alive: Harrison Ford and Sean Young

Everyone was surprised when then 66 year old Harrison Ford appeared in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.  It wasn’t expected for someone his age to do a lot of running and fight scenes, but the actor pulled it off.  People wouldn’t want to see another actor playing the iconic Indiana Jones when Ford can still do it.  But would you believe that at 76 Ford is set to do another Indiana Jones film?   Looks like our archaeologist/hero is not yet ready to turn in his famous hat just yet.  Now 58 years old, the once very visible Sean Young now rarely appears in film and on TV, but she did reprise her role as Rachael in Blade Runner 2049.  She took a hiatus from acting when she had her two sons.

The Graduate Stars Still Alive: Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross

Wouldn’t it be great if Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross, two of the lead stars of The Graduate, would reunite in a new film?  The 80 year old Hoffman isn’t retired yet, but has gotten choosy with his movies.  A reunion movie might be enough to entice the 78 year old Ross to come out of retirement.  Aside from acting, Ross is also known for authoring several children’s books.  Hoffman and Ross were 30 and 27 year old respectively when they made the iconic film that has an iconic theme song that was sung by The Beatles.

The Movie: Doctor Zhivago

Doctor Zhivago Stars Still Alive: Julie Christie

If there is one word to describe actress Julie Christie's role as Lara Antipova in Dr. Zhivago, it will be 'award-winning'.  She's won the best actress award from the Screen Actors Guild, the BAFTA, Golden Globe, and the Academy (Oscars).  At 78, Christie is still active, although she's rarely seen on-screen the past few years, with her most recent film credit (2018) as a narrator.

The Movie: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Considered one of the greatest western movies of all time, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid follows the story of friendly outlaws Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, who are members of the Hole-in-the-Wall gang.  Because of being notorious bank robbers, a railroad president hires a group of men to hunt them down.  The two decide to travel to Bolivia as they are being followed by a hired posse, and the movie is one long adventure.

The Movie: West Side Story

The best way to describe the plot of the film West Side Story is to call it a modern depiction of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  There are rival gangs of young Puerto Ricans (the Jets) and Americans (the Sharks), just like the rivaling families of Montague and Capulet in Romeo and Juliet.  And of course, there's the love story of Tony and Maria, one belongs to the Jets while the other to the Sharks – Romeo and Juliet with different names.

The Movie: To Kill a Mockingbird

The movie is based on the 1960 Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Harper Lee with the same title.  The focus of the film is the story of lawyer Atticus Finch as he defends Tom Robinson in court against false charges.  As Finch defends the black man from the obvious fabricated charges, the usually uneventful town of Maycomb, Alabama, and its citizens are rocked to the core.  Finch’s children, Scout and Jem, are exposed to the evils of the town as the trial ensues, as they deal with the issues of labeling and racism.

To Kill a Mockingbird Stars Still Alive: Robert Duvall and Mary Badham

Award-winning actor Robert Duvall, who played Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird, is now 87 years and still very much active in a career that he really has a passion for.  Mary Badham, who played Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the daughter of Gregory Peck's character Atticus Finch, is now 65 and works as an art restorer and a college testing coordinator.  Once in a while Badham appears in documentaries.  On the other hand, Phillip Alford, who played Jem Finch, Atticus Finch's son, is now 69 and is a businessman living in Grenada, Mississippi.  No current photos circulate online since Alford prefers to stay out of the limelight.

The Movie: Gone With the Wind

Who could ever forget the famous line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." perfectly delivered by beloved actor Clark Gable who played Rhett Butler in the film?  Gone with the Wind is an epic civil war film that is just 'epic'.  The film centers on the life of the spoiled southern girl Scarlett O'Hara - how she survived the war, her infatuation with Ashley Wilkes, and her falling (but denying it) for Rhett Butler.  The film becomes grander with its soundtrack.

Gone With the Wind Stars Still Alive: Olivia de Havilland

The principal cast members of the legendary film Gone With the Wind have now passed away, except for Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie Wilkes.  The actress just turned 102 and looks perfectly healthy for her age.  Olivia de Havilland, who’s now a Dame (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire), is happily enjoying her retirement in the city of Paris.

The Movie: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is one alien movie that's beloved to a lot of people, because the extra terrestrial being in it is not scary at all.  On the contrary, he is very friendly and lovable, which was why the little boy named Elliot chose to keep him after accidentally discovering him.  As E.T. becomes ill and is discovered by the government, Elliot and siblings Michael and Gertie, find a way to return E.T. to his home.

E.T. Stars Still Alive: Drew Barrymore and Henry Thomas

The little boy who played Elliot in E.T. is now 46 years old and is still active in Hollywood.  Henry Thomas was last seen in the film Gerald's Game and the TV movie Girl in the Bunker.  We all know what happened to Elliot's sister, Gertie.  Drew Barrymore became not just a successful actress but a producer as well.  Now 43 years old and a mother of two daughters, Barrymore can be seen in Netflix's Santa Clarita Diet.  She's also a successful entrepreneur with her business ventures called Flower Beauty and Barrymore Wines.

At 78, Al Pacino's career is one that can be called very successful.  He's played iconic roles in movies, such as Michael Corleone in The Godfather.  But for the actor, at his age he is still seeking that next great role.  His upcoming film, The Irishman, will cast him opposite his Godfather co-star Robert De Niro again.  Diane Keaton is one actress we must say is aging gracefully.  At 72, she looks amazing and still very stylish.  She's very active on TV and films, appearing in the series The Young Pope in 2016.  She has one film for 2018, Book Club, and is currently filming 2 movies to be shown in 2019.

With regard to the actors who played the von Trapp kids, sadly, they are minus two, with the passing of Chairman Carr in 2016, who played Liesl, and Heather Menzies-Urich in 2017, who played Louisa. Still very much alive are Angela Cartwright who played Brigitta, is now 65 and works as an artist, photographer and writer.  Duane Chase, who played Kurt, is now 67 and a retired software engineer. For 2020 Susan has already voiced a character for a Rick and Morty episode. Meanwhile, she’s going to be playing in the movie titled Call Jane.

The Movie: Rocky

What's amazing about Rocky is how a then-nobody wrote the screenplay to become an Academy Award Best Picture winner, beating out the likes of All the President's Men.  The story's about a struggling boxer, Rocky Balboa, who had the opportunity to go against heavy-weight champion Apollo Creed.  It's the film that introduced the world to one of the biggest stars on the planet, Sylvester Stallone.

Rocky Stars Still Alive: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire and Burt Young

Actor Sylvester Stallone is best known for his iconic role of Rocky Balbo (or Rambo, it's your choice, really) that even at 72, fans refer to him as such.  When Stallone's big movies started flopping in the box office from 2003 onwards, the actor took a hiatus for a while.  He's shown his presence again through the films The Expendables (2009) and Creed (2015), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).  Talia Shire, who played Rocky's wife, Adrian Balboa, is the same age as Stallone, 72 and rarely appears on screen these days.  Paulie Pennino, Rocky Balboa's friend and future brother-in-law, was played by actor Burt Young, who is now 78.  Young still acts today, and even writes stage plays and authors books.  His other passion is painting, with his works displayed in galleries around the world.
